Wordy Wednesday - Renovating

Do you ever have that feeling that you just need to change things around.  Move the furniture, add some new plants to the garden, try a new craft.  Well lately I have had that feeling.  The need to change things up a bit.  Smarten them up, make them easier to use.

So, after some thinking I have started to come up with a plan of action for what I want to do.  The first thing is to make a list - of course!  I do love lists, but you know that already don't you.

My list is still a Work In Progress (WIP), but one of the first things to tackle is my blog.  That means that amongst other things Love Made My Home is undergoing a bit of a renovation!

I decided that as it is my blogaversary next month it was time for a refresh.  A midlife crisis for a blog?  Can a blog that is only a couple of years old be old enough to have a crisis I wonder!!  Indeed, can a blog have a crisis..  Best to move on I think.  The content and my writing style will remain the same, still crafting and happy, but hopefully Love Made My Home will be easier to use and find things.

It isn't me that is having a midlife crisis by the way.  Just my blog layout!!

One of the reasons that I want to do this is the difficulty that I have in finding my old posts.  After all, if I know they are there and I cannot find them, what chance do you have of locating them!

An example in point.  Recently I was browsing the internet looking for information on an egg cup that I own, and the first page that came up in the search was for my very own blog.  Yet I had no idea that I had ever even mentioned said egg cup online!  Scary huh!

I have also been trying to make sure to renovate my following list.  Not taking anyone off the list of course, just adding new people in.

So I hope that I have been by everyones blog who has commented for the first time recently and I am now following you - with Bloglovin - but if I have missed you, please let me know!  I really like to read the blogs of my readers as that is part of the fun isn't it!

I imagine that new commenters are new followers, but again if you have started following me recently and I haven't stopped by your blog, perhaps you could also let me know!  As much as I hate to admit it, I sometimes lose track of where I have got to with visiting your blogs.  Terrible I know.  Sorry!!

This week I made a start with adding some social media icons - just now they up there, top right of the sidebar.  They will be changing though!  Wrong colour and size!!  Don't worry though if things change, appear or disappear, unless it all vanishes in which case we have a big problem!  Hopefully it will always be obvious where things are for you to find them even while construction is taking place!

If you are planning a refresh or want to add anything to your blog my advice is search online and you will almost certainly find what you are looking for, free buttons, tutorials, explanations.  It is all out there and there is some really good information.

Also, if at first you don't succeed, try and try again!

As with my social media buttons, I found the buttons, found a great tutorial and tried to add them.  Didn't work.  Tried again.  Didn't work.  Did it a bit differently and then ta dah, lo and behold it worked!  The answer was to do it in the way that I knew - not following the tutorial!

The most important thing to remember though is this.  Back up everything and back up your blog before you start messing around!!!

So right now things are under renovation, but will hopefully soon be revealed in a newer, brighter - well, still muted tones! - and easier to use format!

Thank you for bearing with me and not running away even it gets a little dusty around here.  At least this time I will only have a virtual skip - dumpster - not a real one!!  You know how glad I was to see the back of our last skip!!

Amy

p.s. in case you are worried that things are all getting a bit deep around here tomorrow we are back to traditional blogging ground - baking!

  3. Sounds exciting Amy, looking forward to seeing what you do. My answer to changing things around get your son in law to do it, he is an IT specialist. Have a good day.

  4. My blog has remained virtually unchanged since I started it - eight years ago! I keep thinking about change and then can't quite summon up the time and enthusiasm. It's on my list though!

  6. Sounds like a bit of spring cleaning is going on. I followed your advice about backing up the blog using the template section - does that save the words and pictures or just the template? I do it from time to time but the size of the file doesn't seem to change. Maybe I need to do something else as well. Enjoy the reorganisation! x

  7. If you're making a list you'll need a new notebook... That's my motto anyway. I'm too scared to tinker with my blog, I live in fear of messing it all up. I shall look forward to seeing your changes, and a bit of baking too. Enjoy the rest of the week Amy. CJ xx

  9. I found adding social media buttons a complete pain on blogger too. The code should have worked and yet they weren't clickable. I need to sit down for a couple of hours and work out what I did wrong :-S Ug, think I'd rather be knitting :-S

Loved your sunflowers by the way :-)

  11. Looking forward to the renovation friend!! Always fun to shake it up! I should probably start looking at mine too now that you mention it! And like you I need for people to let me know if I have yet to stop by their blogs. Getting everything switched over to blogloving has taken me some time! Good luck and great advice about backing everything up!! Wishing you a fantastic day!!! Nicole xo

  12. Well done Amy, I should take inspiration from you, as I am probably (surely) in a comfortable rut in my own blog! You are such a busy lady, I wonder do you ever sleep? Happy blogaversary, too.xx

  13. Ooh! I'm looking forward to seeing what changes. Not that it isn't fantastic as it is but it's good to shake things up occassionally. X

  14. I'm a real technophobe, I daren't mess about with my blog in case it all ends up disappearing so it hasn't changed much in the years I've been blogging. Good advice about backing it up though.

  16. I have a deep abiding love of making lists. Glad you are having rejiggering your blog. Backing up is a task I seldom do but I will! But then I do not do much in changing my blog.

  17. Good luck with the blog upgrade, Amy. Every time I try to change something, even the smallest of things, I end up with a mess. I remember your "blog accident" from a few months ago. I think you're brave to attempt a change so soon after that event!

  18. Hello, it is only natural to renovate the blog at some point of time. Experimenting to make the blog more attractive and to eliminate the clutter. It is interesting to read about backing up the blog;

    Best wishes

  19. Wow, new blog layout!!! I used to play with my blog design all of the time re-doing this and that but could never get it quite the way I wanted. I finally found someone on Etsy that had the perfect layout and that was that! I haven't changed a thing since then. Well, I add sidebar things but the blog design takes care of making sure it all looks neat and orderly.
Good luck and have fun designing your new look!
    Hugs,

  20. I totally know what you mean Amy - I've been getting the itch to change some things too. I'm still learning and figuring out what I'm doing so I'm not confident to go too crazy.

We are such kindred spirits as I love for lists!! It's so funny but just how may brain works too. Best of luck with anything you decide to do! xoxo

  23. Look forward to seeing what you do with your blog Amy - isn't it strange how we all have the same format to play with and yet everyones blog is so different and unique?

  34. Oh I have been thinking the same now I am in for the long run, I think I need help to do mine though, I'm not a bit technical. Oooo! You have a Pinterest button, now I wish I could get to grips with that. Good luck with the revamp, I can't wait to see what you do xxx

I also did a little work on mine but went the other way and it now has a more minimal look. That Marie Condo book has a lot to answer for.
